When we look upon our equine partners, what do we expect to see?
Do we expect to see something magical mirrored back to us? Do we expect to be saved? For a miracle to happen?
For many cases we do. There is something magical and majestic about horses that many are drawn to. Horses have a way of connecting us back to ourselves in a way that is both powerful and kind. What we must remember is to first and foremost begin to honor the horse for who he or she is. To allow ourselves to let go of our own expectations and projections of who we want this being to be and come to the space of allowing of us both to be true to who we are.
When we come into the space of sharing the wisdom of the horse in the equine assisted personal discovery method that I facilitate, we are coming to experience the gifts of the horse. We come to experience the wisdom and the self discovery they can help us awaken to. What can be easily overlooked however is the honoring of the individual of the horse that is before us.
It is so important for us as humans not to lose sight of the fact that first and foremost our equine friends and teachers are horses. That just like us horses each come here with an individual and unique personality. They also come with their own journeys that they must undertake for the evolution of their own soul. It can be very easy for us to overlook this. To see these beings as wise souls as teachers and nothing else, to forget that they too have instincts and a mind and heart of a beast that needs to be taken in account. What I have learned and am still learning in my interactions and relationships with the horses is to allow them to have the space to be who they are. To let go of our projections of who we want them to be and to really allow their unique self to shine through.
Just like any relationship this can sometimes mean that what we want them to be for us is something we have to let go. We have to be willing to enter a partnership with them that is based on mutual respect and honoring of who we each are as individuals. This does not mean that we do not share in the wisdom and grace of who this animal is. It means that we look with new eyes. It means that we begin to honor both the spirit and the body of the horse. That we learn to also honor both the spirit and body of who we are as humans. When we can come to this experience and to any experience with the allowance of our true selves to emerge, we give way to a relationship with not only others but ourselves that is based on honoring and love of who it is we really are. That I believe is the greatest gift we can offer not only to ourselves but to each person, animal and being that comes into our lives. It is in this gift that we allow each other to emerge. That we give space for each other to emerge and be seen for who it is we really are. When we do this we begin to remember who it is we are and give space for others to do the same.
